Day 6 Collooney to Pontoon
Friday, June 1 (18 miles) — It’s 10:15, and we’ve just had a rain delay. It’s cold and rainy, and Paul thinks we’re better off driving to Pontoon and cycling around the lake this afternoon. Guess we’ll just cool our heels in the lounge. We finally left around 11:00 for the one plus hour drive to Pontoon. The hotel (Healy’s Hotel) is tucked into a bend in the road facing Lough Cullin. Paul suggested we lunch first; then go for a shorter ride. We finally left at 3:00 for a 30K round trip pedal to Castlebar. We were riding into the wind on the way out, and the road surface was coarse so that there was no extra roll. We stopped at a McHale's Pub in Castlebar for a little break before returning. Diane had a coffee and Bill and Ruairi quaffed a Guinness (for strength!) for the ride back. We had a tailwind the whole way, which was much more pleasant. We went to another local pub for a quick one then back to the hotel for a lovely dinner. Lamb and Hake were our entree selections, preceeded by oysters-in-the-half-shell & Guinneess (which itself is known locally as the true definition of an "Irish breakfast").
This concludes another great cycling vacation!
